I love the ease of this golden brown Grilled Pizza recipe, using a loaf of ready-made bread makes this such an easy weeknight meal that you don’t have to think too much about. If you’re more of a true homemade pizza type person, homemade pizza dough, you must try my Cast Iron Skillet Pizza recipe!

Why this french bread pizza works

With just a few minutes of prep and a handful of common ingredients (no extra trip to the grocery store needed), you can make a super tasty pizza for dinner. Grilled pizzas add a delicious smoky flavor. Plus, the grill helps crisp up the bottoms of the bread loaves. Making your own pizzas is very easy and simple to customize.

Let's Gather the Ingredients

All the ingredients needed for this french bread pizza.
  • Bread: I used a loaf of soft French bread but I don’t see why you can’t use other loaves like a French baguette.
  • Pizza sauce: Use your favorite brand or make some homemade pizza sauce
  • Cheese: shredded mozzarella cheese. I have found that shredded fresh mozzarella melts better, but the bagged shredded cheese can work too. I also used grated Parmesan cheese.
  • Toppings: I used pepperoni slices, Italian sausage, sliced olives, diced green pepper, red pepper, and diced onions
  • Herbs and Spices: minced garlic cloves and chopped fresh basil

How to Grill French Bread Pizza

French bread cut in half and sauce, cheese and toppings added.
  • Step 1: Slice a loaf of French bread lengthwise.
  • Step 2: Spread pizza sauce evenly over each slice of bread. Add fresh minced garlic over the sauce and top with shredded cheese.
  • Step 3: Add pepperoni slices.
  • Step 4: Add cooked ground sausage and sliced black olives.

  • Step 6: Lay uncooked pizzas each on a piece of aluminum foil and wrap it loosely around the edges. Place pizzas in foil over indirect heat on the grill and grill until cheese is melted. Garnish with basil and grated Parmesan cheese. Serve and enjoy.

Recipe Tips

  • Try Different Sauces – Swap classic marinara for pesto, BBQ sauce, or buffalo sauce.
  • Switch Up the Cheese – Try a different melty cheese. Mozzarella is great, but try provolone, gouda, or feta for extra flavor.
  • Keep an Eye on the Heat – Grill over low indirect heat to avoid burning the bottom before the cheese melts.
  • Use the Right Knife. When cutting bread, use a bread knife or a nicely serrated knife to help cut through your loaf easily..
  • Serve sides. This delicious pizza goes great with any of your favorite salads or a side of steamed veggies.

Can you make these in advance?

Yes, you can assemble these a day in advance, then wrap them tightly with plastic wrap and aluminum foil before storing in the fridge. Remove the plastic and foil before grilling.

Can you bake them in the oven?

Grilling is the easiest way to make these pizzas, but the best part is that they do well when you bake them in a preheated oven too. Assemble the pizzas as normal then bake at 400F for 15 minutes, or until the pizza cheese has melted. I like to still wrap them with foil and place them on a baking sheet to catch any melting cheese or overflowing toppings. But these could be baked directly on the oven rack in the foil.
