Why are these the best pinwheels

No cooking needed! They’re great for snacks, lunches, and party appetizers. Tortilla wrap sandwiches are simple to customize and are perfect for meal prepping since you can make them in advance.

Making homemade pinwheels is cheaper than buying pre-made sandwiches from the store. While they’re convenient, those come with a hefty price tag. Personally, I think making your own sandwiches gives you more opportunity to make them exactly how you like them, without breaking the bank.

Let's Gather the Ingredients

All the ingredients for these pinwheels.
  • Bacon: cooked and cut into pieces
  • Cheese: softened cream cheese and shredded Colby Jack cheese
  • Shredded lettuce: Iceberg or romaine works great.
  • Diced red onion: White or yellow onion will also work.
  • Italian dressing: I use creamy Italian dressing.
  • Deli meat: shaved ham and shaved turkey
  • Large flour tortillas: burrito size, you can certainly use smaller tortillas if that's what you have on hand. You will just need to make more rolls.

How to Make Pinwheel Sandwiches

Pinwheel filling mixture mixed in a bowl.
  • Step 1: Add cream cheese, cooked bacon, and shredded Colby Jack to a medium bowl. Stir to combine.
  • Step 2: In a separate bowl, add shredded lettuce, diced onion and dressing. Toss to combine.
Filling spread on a tortilla with ham, turkey, and lettuce on top.
  • Step 3: Lay tortilla flat out and spread cream cheese mixture evenly on the tortilla. Leave a very small edge around the tortilla so it’s not too packed or hard to roll. Repeat for all of the tortillas.
  • Step 4: Add a few slices of ham and turkey with some of the lettuce mixture to each of the wraps.

  • Step 5: Roll tortilla up and wrap tightly with plastic wrap. Place wrapped rolled tortillas in the fridge to chill.
  • Step 6: Remove wraps from fridge, toss the plastic wrap and use a sharp knife to cut into even pinwheel sandwiches.

Recipe Tips

  • Store leftover pinwheels in an airtight container and keep them in the fridge.
  • Don’t skip the chilling step- it helps meld the flavors together and will help the rolled sandwiches hold their shape when you go to cut them.
  • Any flavor tortilla will work for this delicious finger food recipe. You could use traditional regular tortillas, spinach wraps, and whole wheat tortillas to serve a variety of pinwheels. They really are a great appetizer.
  • These ham and turkey Pinwheel Sandwiches are great for kids lunch boxes too.
  • Swiss cheese, provolone cheese, or cheddar cheese would be a great option too.

What else can I add to this easy recipe?

You could add some diced red bell peppers, cucumbers, or other fresh veggies to the mix. Just be sure not to overload the wraps. Try other meats like roast beef. Instead of deli meat, try rotisserie chicken.

Can you make these easy pinwheels the night before?

Yes, pinwheels are great for making in advance. I would suggest making these no more than 24 hours in advance. Store them properly in the refrigerator. Due to the nature of the ingredients, these should be kept refrigerated when not serving.

Do pinwheel sandwiches get soggy?

If you add too much dressing or other wet ingredients that can soak into the tortillas over time, they could get soggy. However,  with this cream cheese mixture layer, it helps act as a thicker barrier for the amount of Italian dressing I use with the lettuce. If you add too many extra ingredients, especially those wet ingredients, you risk soggy pinwheels if left too long.
