Recipe Tips

  • Melt the chocolate in 30-second bursts and stir between each one. It goes from smooth to seized fast if you push it.
  • Put the melted chocolate in a zip-top baggie and snip a tiny corner off. It's easier for small hands than a spoon, and the dots are neater.
  • Set each finished treat aside to dry before you move it. The chocolate is the glue, and it needs a few minutes to hold.
  • Pour the sprinkles onto a plate before you start the cones so you can dip the chocolate edge straight in.
  • The red melting wafers make the turkey wattles, but a small tube of red icing works the same and skips a bowl.

Recipe FAQ's

Do these Thanksgiving treats need to be baked?

No. Every one of the five is store-bought cookies and candy held together with melted chocolate. The only "cooking" is melting chocolate in the microwave.

What kind of chocolate works best?

Chocolate chips or melting wafers, either one. Melting wafers set a little harder and faster; chips are what most people already have. Use white chocolate chips or white wafers where the recipe calls for them.

Can I use icing instead of melting wafers?

Yes. A small tube of red icing does the same job as the red melting wafers on the turkey cookies, and it's less to melt.

How many does this make?

Each of the five recipes makes 24 treats. You don't have to make all five — pick the ones your kids will eat and shop for those.

What age can help make these?

Any kid old enough to press a candy eye onto a dot of chocolate. An adult handles the microwave and the hot bowl; the sticking is the fun part.
