Let's take a quick look at the Ingredients
You won’t need much for this recipe at all! Here’s what you need:
- Hotdogs
- Crescent roll dough
- Candy eyes
- Ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, pickle relish, a slice of cheese
How to Make Mummy Hot Dogs
First, you are going to make your Mummy hot dogs! Then, you’ll whip up some dipping sauces. Follow the steps below to make these cute Halloween treats.
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Preheat the oven and spray a cookie sheet with nonstick cooking spray.
Step 2: Cut the Dough
Unroll the crescent dough on a large cutting mat. Cut 1/4th inch slices down the long side of the dough.
Step 3: Wrap Dough Around Hot Dog
Starting at one end, wrap a strip of dough randomly around the hot dog. You may wish to use 2 strips per hot dog. Leave a gap for the eyes.
Step 4: Bake the Hot Dogs
Place the crescent-wrapped hot dogs on the pan and place them in the oven. Bake for 10 minutes and check if the dough has cooked. Add another minute or 2 of baking time if the dough isn’t quite baked through.
Step 5: Add the Eyes
Remove the mummies from the cookie sheet and place them on a serving plate. Put a dot of mustard for each eye, then place a candy eye on the mustard.
How to Make Dipping Sauces
There are 4 types of dipping sauces you can make to go with your mummy dogs.
Web Sauce
To make a sauce that looks like a web, you’ll use ketchup and mustard. First, fill a small bowl with ketchup. Make three circles around the bowl, each one smaller than the last. Then, put a large dot of mustard in the middle. Using a toothpick, start from the middle and pull the mustard out past the last circle to create a line. Go to the opposite end of the bowl and pull from that side. Do this 5 to 7 times to create a web design.
Monster Puddle
To make a monster puddle dipping sauce, you will need ketchup and green relish. Go around the outer edge of your bowl in a circular manner and make a “cup of ketchup.” Then, fill the “cup” with green relish. Place some candy eyes around it to create a monster puddle.
Ghost Sauce
Use a mini ghost cookie cutter or a sharp knife and cut out a ghost shape. You can cut out your eyes for more effect. Make a few and place them in a bowl of ketchup. You can also cut out bats if you want.
Bloodshot Eye Sauce
For this sauce, you will need mayonnaise and ketchup. Put some mayonnaise in a bowl and use a spoon to create a “hole” in the middle. Fill the “hole” with ketchup. Use a toothpick to pull the ketchup out in a squiggle line to create a bloodshot eye effect. You can add a little circle of mustard to finish the eye out.
Recipe Tips
If you liked this recipe, here are some other tips to keep in mind:
- Add cheese for more yumminess. You can roll up a piece of cheese under the crescent dough for more flavor.
- Make mini mummies. You can make mini mummies by cutting the hotdogs in half or using mini sausages.
- Make all the sauces. The sauces are all fun and the kids will love trying all the different ones.
What Dough Do I Need for these Mummy Dogs?
The best and easiest dough to use is a crescent roll dough that comes in sheets. You can unroll it and easily cut it into strips to make the mummies. You can also use plain crescent rolls, just pinch your seams and then cut out the strips.
How Do I Store Leftovers?
Kids and adults alike will love these mummy hot dogs, so you probably won’t have any leftovers. But, if you do, you can store any leftover mummy dogs in an airtight container in the refrigerator. When you want to eat them, reheat them in the oven for 5 minutes so that the dough won’t be soggy.
Other Hot Dog Recipes to Try
Hot dogs are a super easy lunch idea or quick dinner fix. But, slapping a boring hot dog onto the plate isn’t all that appetizing. Here are some of my other favorite hot dog recipes to try:
